Book: Show us one of your favorite works of fiction.
Why, I'm heading out around 9AM to see the insanity that is downtown on Xmas Eve. I love last minute shoppers because if I actually bought Xmas presents for people, I'd do it months beforehand. I also have to work on postcards. I have three actually painted and one that's inked.

I'd be doing these postcards much faster if it weren't for the Return. I never read all the way through it but I treated myself to another William Shatner book earlier in the week, so I have to finish this one before I move on to my new book. I wish I had read it sooner because it's going so well so far. There are parts where I just want to call up my boyfriend and be like, "why aren't you reading this?!"
Oh, and it's really, really cold outside. That has hindered my work a lot considering I can only get work done when I'm away from home. I've also been severely depressed. It's been fun.
TV Land is going to start showing Star Trek TOS in November it seems. TOS is going to join their regular schedule in addition to TOS related programming that they will no doubt shove down unsuspecting throats. ("Hey, what happened to my eight hour block of Gunsmoke?!")
While generally speaking, I should be happy in any case that a channel syndicates any Star Trek series. Hell, I'd probably be a little happy if some channel syndicated Voyager even. There's something about syndicated Star Trek that is just a little more comforting than watching it on a DVD. When you watch a DVD, you have to pick the episode and normally that's way too much commitment for me. Watching Star Trek on TV, I can just veg out and not have to worry about choices.
The idea that Star Trek is becoming "popular" simply by accident is a crock. You know every move to get TOS on more TV channels is calculated for two purposes: attempt to revive the franchise and to prepare people for the new Star Trek movie if it even comes out.
My opinion on the remastered episodes of TOS? Crisp and clean. And that's always good.
Apparently they've started showing Star Trek on CW. I'm not sure how permanent the showings will be since looking ahead at the TV Guide listings they only show two episodes being shown between now and October 1st.
I don't know how to feel about Star Trek being shown on G4. Is it really necessary to pollute the fanbase with simpletons who play HALO? I don't think so.
The general point is to revive the franchise, and at this point it seems like Paramount is trying by any means necessary. Is there any way to revive a franchise in such a way that it isn't like prostituting a fine series? Or has that decency line been crossed long ago?
It's been argued a lot lately wither or not to let Star Trek "die." One side says that the idea of letting the franchise simply "die" is ridiculous while another side is dreadfully tired of being embarassed by the feeble attempts to bring Star Trek back. I'm somewhere in between. I would like Star Trek to come back strong simply for the sake of making people forget about Star Wars. Wasn't it a bit weird that Star Wars flooded broadcasting times with commercials for their new DVDs and video game around Star Trek's 40th anniversary? I could be simply another paranoid anti-Star Wars Trekkie, but who knows.
I happened upon an episode of the Outer Limits last night with Brent Spiner (Data from TNG). It was queer to see him using contractions and saying things like, "son of a bitch." The episode was sort of subpar, but Brent Spiner was fantastic as usual. What luck that I could catch that episode. San Francisco's local Fox network shows a lot of sci-fi shows like Farscape, Stargate Atlantis, and etc. It's surprising and somewhat seeming like the poor man's Sci-fi Channel at times.
StarTrek.com has a nice article detailing Star Trek's birthday and how it came to be. Memory Alpha has a production timeline. Christies is running an auction at the beginning of October. Space.com has an article you might like to read, if you like reading articles about cosmonauts talking about Star Trek. SFGate has an article detailing after forty years, just what technologies from Star Trek have entered our daily lives. CNN has a cute interview with Shatner and Nimoy where they speak about the unfortunateness of Star Trek today. BBC has a gallery up. Here is a list of some Star Trek novel reprints in celebration of ST's 40th year. (I suggest Federation)
There are two kinds of people in this world: Star Trek people and Star Wars people. I wasn't a Star Wars person. I grew up with Star Trek, especially TNG during its original run. My mom wasn't very interactive with me so I was left to grow up with the television. And every week, I grew up with the "life lessons" taught by Picard and his crew. I learned that playing too many games would make your mind rot, long distance relationships never work, and that it's in our best interests to be nice to others. Meanwhile, I had a huge crush on Wesley Crusher. Then I grew old enough to not need the supervision of Star Trek anymore. But thanks to SpikeTV and the advent of DVDs, I can relive every DS9, TNG, or TOS episode. Amen.
One day, I asked my father if he was a Star Trek person or a Star Wars person. Being my father, of course he answered correctly. When I asked him why he swayed that way, he simply told me "Star Wars is lame."
If you could write a book about anything, what would it be about?
A good Star Trek novel revolving around Species 8472. They've found themselves immune to Janeway's nanoprobes and want to take revenge on our space for sheltering the Borg. Chaos ensues. I understand the popularity of Voyager is nonexistant but still. If the novel were really well done and made Species 8472 more threatening than some fluidic space-type tripod-legged aliens, anyone would want to read it. Plus, very easily could I just write the novel about DS9 since Voyager and Deep Space Nine overlap in years. Given how broken and awesome Species 8472 are, it'd be easy for them to get from the Delta quadrant to the Alpha quadrant to terrorize DS9. At the same time, maybe the species is lured over there because of all the worm hole activity going on due to the Prophets.
Why hasn't this book been written?
